A Family Office in Fitzrovia

This stunning Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse in London’s Fitzrovia, has been sympathetically restored and extended by SPPARC, delivering four floors of first-class workspace and amenities for a family office and two charities.

A unique hexagonal glulam structure forms part of the roof on a new one-storey extension which houses a kitchen and social spaces at ground-floor level and a terrace above. The striking sculptural feature is built from UK-grown European Oak; its honeycomb form supports glass roofing panels and a secondary level of smaller hexagonal veneered oak elements that provide solar shading.

To overcome severe site constraints which made the use of a crane impossible, a complex installation strategy was developed by G-frame Structures whereby small individual glulam sections could be carried manually through the building. The roof was then constructed manually in situ, with each section connected by steel restraint nodes and tension rods concealed in each of the timber lengths.
