Fantastic to see Blaker Island win the Best Private Housing Award at the 2019 Structural Timber Awards.  This was a very challenging CLT project which G-frame installed in just six weeks on a tiny operational lock-keeper’s island on London’s Stratford Back Rivers. Building on such a small and difficult site presented a uniquely complex set of weight and accessibility constraints.  To overcome this, G-frame’s installation strategy involved a 100-tonne mobile crane erected adjacent to the site which was used to lift in a self-erecting IGO50 mini tower crane to the island.  The scheme by Roberts & Treguer comprises a five-storey CLT apartment block and pair of semi-detached townhouses designed to meet passivhaus airtightness standards of 0.6 ACH.  Roberts & Treguer’s sensitive design carefully preserves the history of the area and proves that a generous design ethos does not need to impact on profitability.
